Chapter 1 · ज्योतिष Jyotisha

What Jyotish is, and the classical texts

Before learning to read a chart, it helps to know where Jyotish comes from and which texts it rests on. This chapter places Jyotish among the Vedic sciences, explains its three branches, and introduces the classical works this course draws on.

What this chapter covers
  • Where Jyotish sits among the six Vedangas
  • The three branches of Jyotish, and which one reads a birth chart
  • The main classical texts of Parashari Jyotish, and what each is known for

1. The eye of the Veda

Jyotisha is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of knowledge that support the study of the Vedas. Tradition calls it Vedachakshu, the eye of the Veda, because it tells the time: when a ritual should be performed, and how the seasons and sky move. Select each limb to see what it covers.

2. Three branches

Classical Jyotish is traditionally divided into three branches (skandhas). LotusAstro works within the third, Hora: the reading of individual birth charts. Select a branch.

Together these three branches made up Jyotisha: the mathematics of the sky, the reading of collective events, and the reading of individual lives.

3. The classical texts

Parashari Jyotish rests on a small library of classical works. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is the foundation; later authors summarised, extended and sometimes disagreed with it. Select a text to see what it is known for.

4. How to read this course

Each chapter introduces one building block and lets you try it. By chapter 12 you will be able to follow how a chart is read: the signs and planets, the houses, how strong each planet is, which divisional charts confirm it, and when its results are likely to unfold. Where the classical authors disagree, we say so.

Worked example · Albert Einstein

The first of two charts used throughout this course

Every chapter that follows ends with this one real chart, so you can watch each building block at work. Albert Einstein’s birth time comes from his birth record and carries Astro-Databank’s highest reliability rating (AA), which matters: a few minutes’ error can change the ascendant and the divisional charts.

Positions converted by LotusAstro to the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa, about 22°10′ in 1879), whole-sign houses. One famous chart illustrates a technique; it proves nothing on its own.

Worked example · Indira Gandhi

The second chart

Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman prime minister, was born late at night in Allahabad. Her birth time comes from her own account, rated A by Astro-Databank: good, though not as strong as a birth record.
