Lordship: functional benefics and yogakaraka

This is where reading a chart really begins. The same planet can be helpful in one chart and troublesome in another, depending on which houses it rules. This chapter explains functional benefics and malefics, and the yogakaraka.

What you will learn here
  • The difference between natural and functional nature
  • Which house lordships make a planet helpful or harmful
  • What a yogakaraka is, and which ascendants have one

1. One planet, two characters

In chapter 3 you met each planet’s natural character: Jupiter benefic, Saturn malefic, and so on. But in a chart each planet also rules one or two houses, and the houses it rules shape how it behaves for that person. This is functional nature, and Parashari Jyotish gives it great weight.

The main rules: lords of the trines (5th and 9th) are auspicious; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are inauspicious; natural benefics that rule an angle lose some of their goodness; a planet that rules both an angle and a trine becomes a yogakaraka, the most helpful planet in the chart; and lords of the 2nd and 7th are marakas, linked to longevity.

2. Try it

Choose an ascendant. The chart shows which houses each planet rules, and the table summarises its role.

Worked example · Albert Einstein

Lordship for a Gemini ascendant

For Einstein’s Gemini ascendant: Mercury rules the 1st and 4th (the ascendant lord); Venus rules the 5th and 12th, so as a trine lord it is a functional benefic; Saturn rules the 8th and 9th; Jupiter rules the 7th and 10th, two angles, and as 7th lord it is also a maraka; Mars rules the 6th and 11th and is a functional malefic. No planet rules both an angle and a trine, so Gemini has no yogakaraka.

Try it: choose Gemini in the table above.

Birth data: 14 March 1879, 11:30 local time, Ulm, Germany; Rodden rating AA (from the birth record), as listed by Astrotheme from Astro-Databank. Positions converted by LotusAstro to the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa, about 22°10′ in 1879), whole-sign houses. One famous chart illustrates a technique; it proves nothing on its own.

Worked example · Indira Gandhi

A yogakaraka for Cancer

For a Cancer ascendant, Mars rules the 5th (Scorpio) and the 10th (Aries), a trine and an angle, so it is the yogakaraka, and in her chart it sits in the 2nd. The Moon rules the ascendant; Saturn rules the 7th and 8th and is a maraka; Mercury rules the 3rd and 12th and is a functional malefic; Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th.

Try it: choose Cancer in the table above.
