Manglik dosha: is it really there, and is it cancelled?
Manglik dosha is one of the most feared ideas in marriage matching, and one of the most misunderstood. Enter where Mars sits to see whether the dosha applies, and which of the commonly cited cancellations remove it.

Enter where Mars sits. If you know them, add its house counted from the Moon and from Venus, which some traditions also use.
What manglik dosha is, and is not
Manglik (or kuja) dosha is said to arise when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart, counted from the ascendant and, in many traditions, also from the Moon and Venus. Some schools leave out the 2nd house. It is applied in marriage matching because these houses touch the self, family, home, partnership, longevity and the bed.
The rule as commonly applied today comes from later traditions of matching rather than from a single definitive verse, and practice varies widely. It also comes with many cancellations, which is why so many charts said to be manglik are not, on a careful reading.
Commonly cited cancellations
- Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its sign of exaltation (Capricorn).
- Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo; in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio; in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn; in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces; in the 12th in Taurus or Libra.
- Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars.
- Mars as yogakaraka: for Cancer and Leo ascendants Mars rules an angle and a trine, and is not treated as a source of dosha.
- Both partners manglik: the doshas are held to cancel each other.
A LotusAstro reading never treats manglik dosha as a verdict on a marriage. It is one factor, weighed with the 7th house and its lord, Venus, the navamsa and the timing of both charts.
