How the navamsa is calculated

Each sign of 30° is divided into nine parts of 3°20′. The first part of a movable sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) begins from that same sign; of a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), from the 9th sign from it; and of a dual sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), from the 5th. The nine parts then follow the zodiac in order.

Each navamsa also corresponds to one quarter (pada) of a nakshatra, which is why the two systems line up exactly.

Why it matters for marriage

The navamsa (D9) is the most important divisional chart. It is read for marriage and partnership and for the underlying strength of every planet. A planet in the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa is vargottama, and is considered especially strong. What the birth chart promises for marriage is relied on only when the navamsa confirms it.
