Dates and timings for your city

Why the date changes from country to country
A Hindu festival is not tied to a date in the Western calendar but to a tithi, a lunar day, and the scriptures say at what time of day that tithi must hold. Diwali’s Lakshmi puja needs the Amavasya (new moon tithi) in the evening twilight, pradosh; Janmashtami needs the Ashtami at midnight; Raksha Bandhan the Purnima in the afternoon; Ganesh Chaturthi the Chaturthi at midday. The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere in the world, but sunset, midnight and midday come at different moments in London, Toronto and Delhi. So the evening on which the Amavasya holds in London can be a day before the evening on which it holds in Delhi.
That is why a family in the UK that follows an Indian calendar can celebrate on the wrong day. Each date on this page is calculated for the city named, using its own sunrise, sunset and time zone.
How we calculate the dates
- Lunar months are amanta (new moon to new moon) and named by the sign the Sun is in at the new moon, so adhika (extra) months are handled automatically.
- Each festival has its tithi and its prescribed time of day, following the rules of the dharmashastra digests Nirnaya Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu as panchang makers apply them: sunrise for most vratas, forenoon for Akshaya Tritiya and Vasant Panchami, midday for Rama Navami and Ganesh Chaturthi, afternoon for Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra and Bhai Dooj, evening twilight for Diwali, Dhanteras and Holika Dahan, midnight for Maha Shivaratri and Janmashtami, moonrise for Karwa Chauth.
- Raksha Bandhan avoids Bhadra (Vishti karana). Janmashtami shows the Vaishnava date, with the Smarta date where it differs.
- We checked every date in the table against Drik Panchang for all four cities: all 124 agree.
Regional traditions differ for some festivals; if your family or temple follows a particular panchang, follow it.
