Why the Vedic Sun sign is different

Western astrology starts the zodiac at the spring equinox, so Aries begins on about 21 March every year. Jyotish starts the zodiac at a fixed point among the stars. Because the Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), the equinox drifts back through the stars by about 1° every 72 years. The gap between the two zodiacs, the ayanamsa, is now about 24°.

So the Sun enters sidereal Aries around 14 April (the date of Mesha Sankranti and of many South and East Asian new years), Taurus around 15 May, and so on. If you were born in the first three weeks or so of a Western sign, your Vedic Sun sign is the one before.
