How the Vimshottari dasha works
Vimshottari ("of 120") is the dasha system Parashara recommends above all others. The nine planets rule periods of fixed length in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, making 120 years.
The cycle starts from the lord of your birth nakshatra. How far the Moon had already travelled through that nakshatra decides how much of the first period was already used up at birth, the "balance of dasha". Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas in the same order and proportions, and each of those into nine pratyantardashas.
A period gives the results of its planet as placed in your chart: its house, sign, dignity and lordship. That is why the same dasha can be excellent for one person and difficult for another. Our chapter on dashas explains how to read them.
We use a year of 365.2425 days, the true length of the solar year. Some software uses 365.25 or 360 days; over a long period the dates can differ by days or, for the 360-day year, by months.
