What sade sati is
Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign, so its passage through three signs (the 12th from your Moon, your Moon sign itself, and the 2nd from your Moon) lasts about seven and a half years: "sade sati" means seven and a half. It comes round about every 29½ years, so most people live through two or three.
Tradition divides it into three phases: the rising phase as Saturn enters the 12th from the Moon, the peak as it crosses the Moon sign, and the setting phase in the 2nd. It is associated with pressure, delay and responsibility, but also with maturity and lasting results; Saturn rewards steady effort. How it is felt depends on the whole chart: Saturn's dignity, the dasha running, and whether Saturn is a functional benefic for your ascendant.
The two smaller Saturn transits, through the 4th and the 8th from the Moon (about two and a half years each), are called dhaiya (Kantaka Shani and Ashtama Shani).
