How the 36 gunas are scored

Guna milan (Ashtakoota) compares the two Moons: their signs and their nakshatras. Eight kootas, weighted from 1 to 8, add up to 36. The scheme is the one set out in the muhurta texts such as Muhurta Chintamani and used across North India. Our guide to the 36 gunas explains what each koota is meant to show.

KootaPointsCompares
Varna1Temperament grouping of the Moon signs
Vashya2Mutual attraction (human, four-footed, water, wild and insect groups)
Tara3The count of nakshatras from each partner to the other
Yoni4The animal of each nakshatra: instinct and intimacy
Graha Maitri5Friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs
Gana6Deva, manushya or rakshasa temperament
Bhakoot7The distance between the Moon signs; 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score nothing
Nadi8Constitution; the same nadi in both scores nothing

What the total means

Traditionally 18 of 36 is the minimum for a match to be considered; 25 and above is regarded as good, and above 32 as excellent. The total is only a first filter. A low score in nadi or bhakoot is weighed more heavily than the total itself, and the classical texts list conditions under which those doshas are cancelled. Most of all, guna milan looks only at the two Moons: the 7th house, Venus, the navamsa and the dashas of both charts matter as much, and are what a full compatibility reading examines.

Different sites give different scores. Why?

Three reasons. First, the Moon’s nakshatra: if either person was born near the Moon’s change of nakshatra, a few minutes of time or a different time zone changes several kootas at once. We apply the historical time zone of the birthplace. Second, small differences in the tables for vashya and gana between regional traditions. Ours follow the widely used Muhurta Chintamani tables. Third, some sites apply dosha cancellations to the score itself; we show the raw score and list the cancellations separately.
