Ascendant calculator: find your lagna
The lagna, or ascendant, is the sign rising in the east at the moment of birth. It is the first house of your chart and the starting point of every reading. Enter an exact birth time.

What the lagna is
As the Earth turns, each of the twelve signs rises over the eastern horizon in turn, one roughly every two hours. The sign rising at birth is the lagna. In Parashari Jyotish it becomes the first house, the next sign the second house, and so on round the chart. That is why two people born on the same day but hours apart have very different charts.
The lagna describes the body, the temperament and the overall direction of a life; its lord, the planet that rules the rising sign, is one of the most important planets in the chart.
Why an accurate time matters
Because a sign rises in about two hours (faster or slower depending on the sign and your latitude), a birth time that is out by even 10–15 minutes can change the lagna when it falls near the edge of a sign. We warn you when yours is close to a change.
