What a kundli shows

A kundli (also called a janma kundali or janam patri) is a map of the sky at the moment of birth, seen from the place of birth. Jyotish reads it in the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars rather than to the seasons, so your Vedic signs are usually one sign behind the Western ones you may know.

The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It becomes the first house, and every other house is counted from it. Because the lagna changes about every two hours, an accurate birth time matters more than anything else in the chart.

The Moon sign (rashi) and the Moon's nakshatra (birth star) are the basis of horoscopes, marriage matching and the dasha periods. The navamsa (D9) is the ninth-division chart, read for marriage and for the true strength of each planet. The Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year life cycle into planetary periods, which is how Jyotish times events.

How we calculate it

Questions people ask

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the equinoxes. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The two have drifted apart by about 24° (the ayanamsa), so most placements move back one sign.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Tick "Time not known". We use noon, and leave out the lagna and the houses, which depend on the exact time. The Moon sign is still right unless the Moon changed sign that day; we tell you when that happens.

Is this the same as other sites?

For the same birth data and the Lahiri ayanamsa, the planets should agree to within a minute of arc. Differences usually come from the time zone: many sites ignore war time or summer time in older dates. We apply them.
