What a nakshatra is
The Moon goes round the zodiac in about 27⅓ days. The ancient astronomers divided its path into 27 nakshatras, lunar mansions of 13°20′ each, named after the star groups along the way. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a presiding deity, and its own nature; each is split into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′.
Your janma nakshatra, the one the Moon was in when you were born, starts your Vimshottari dasha: the lord of your nakshatra rules your first period of life. It also gives the traditional first syllable for a name, and three of the eight kootas in marriage matching (tara, yoni, gana and nadi depend on it).
The gana, yoni and nadi shown are those used in guna milan; the naming syllables follow the widely used Avakahada chart.
