Pancha Mahapurusha yogas
The five great-person yogas: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha.
- Formed when
- Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own sign or its exaltation sign, and in an angle (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant
- Source
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; also Phaladeepika
- How common
- Common: about one chart in three has at least one (our count over 2,000 random birth times)
Parashara names five yogas after the five planets that can form them. Each needs the planet to be strong by sign (in its own or exaltation sign) and strong by house (in an angle). The Sun and Moon do not form them, nor do Rahu and Ketu.
Ruchaka yoga (Mars)
Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, in an angle. The texts describe a strong and courageous person who overcomes rivals and rises to command; the qualities of Mars, energy, decision and leadership, at their best.
Bhadra yoga (Mercury)
Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, in an angle. The texts describe intelligence, eloquence and learning, skill with words and numbers, and respect from the learned.
Hamsa yoga (Jupiter)
Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer, in an angle. Named after the swan, it describes a righteous, contented and well-regarded person, respected by good people and inclined to learning and dharma.
Malavya yoga (Venus)
Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces, in an angle. The texts describe comforts, vehicles, a good spouse, wealth and refined taste in the arts.
Shasha yoga (Saturn)
Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra, in an angle. The texts describe authority over many people, land and staff; they also warn of a calculating nature, Saturn’s shadow side.
What weakens them
A Mahapurusha planet that is combust, badly aspected or in a weak navamsa gives much less. Some later authors also require the yoga planet not to be joined with the Sun or Moon. Einstein’s chart has Malavya yoga (Venus exalted in Pisces in the 10th); see chapter 10.
Does your chart have it?
The free kundli finds this yoga and the others on this list in your chart and says which planets form it.
Sources: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Pancha Mahapurusha, raja, dhana, Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhara and Kemadruma yogas) and Phaladeepika (Gajakesari, Adhi, Amala, neecha bhanga and the viparita yogas). The results are summarised in our own words. A yoga gives its result in proportion to the strength of the planets forming it, and mainly in their dashas.
