BPHS chapter 34 explained: which planets help or harm each ascendant

The same planet can be the best friend of one chart and the main source of trouble in another. Chapter 34 of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra explains why, and gives the rules for deciding. This is the chapter every Parashari reading rests on. Here it is in plain English, rule by rule, with Parashara’s own verdict for all 12 ascendants.

The chapter in six rules
  1. Lords of the trines (1st, 5th, 9th) are always good.
  2. Lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th do harm.
  3. Ruling an angle (4th, 7th, 10th) spoils a natural benefic and calms a natural malefic.
  4. A planet ruling both an angle and a trine is a yogakaraka.
  5. When a planet rules two houses, the one holding its moolatrikona sign decides.
  6. Lords of the 2nd and 7th are marakas, read for longevity, never on their own.

1. Natural and functional nature

Every planet has a natural character. Jupiter and Venus are gentle by nature, Saturn and Mars harsh. But in a chart each planet also rules one or two houses, counted from the ascendant, and those houses colour how it behaves for that person. This second layer is its functional nature, and chapter 34 is entirely about it.

The chapter has three parts. Parashara first sets out the general principles. He then goes through the ascendants one by one, naming the helpful, harmful and yoga-giving planets for each. He closes with a warning that a planet’s part in a larger yoga can outweigh everything above.

2. Not all houses are equal

Parashara ranks the houses, and the rank matters as much as the group. Within each group, the later house is the stronger one.

Trines1st, 5th, 9th. Their lords are always auspicious.5th < 9th
Angles1st, 4th, 7th, 10th. Their lordship changes a planet’s nature.1st < 4th < 7th < 10th
Harmful3rd, 6th, 11th. Their lords do harm.3rd < 6th < 11th
Neutral2nd, 8th, 12th. Their lords follow their other house and company.12th < 2nd < 8th

Two points surprise most students. The 11th, the house of gains, is the most harmful lordship, and the 8th is the worst of the neutral houses. And the 1st house belongs to both groups: it is an angle and a trine, which is why the lord of the ascendant is always counted as good.

One exemption: the Sun and the Moon carry no blemish for ruling the 8th, because each rules a single sign.

3. Two houses: the moolatrikona decides

Five planets rule two signs, so for any ascendant they rule two houses, often with opposite effects. Parashara settles the conflict with the moolatrikona: each planet’s favourite sign, listed in chapter 3. The house holding it is the planet’s main lordship.

PlanetRulesMoolatrikona
SunLeoLeo, 0°–20°
MoonCancerTaurus, 3°–30°
MarsAries, ScorpioAries, 0°–12°
MercuryGemini, VirgoVirgo, 15°–20°
JupiterSagittarius, PiscesSagittarius, 0°–10°
VenusTaurus, LibraLibra, 0°–15°
SaturnCapricorn, AquariusAquarius, 0°–20°

Example. For an Aries ascendant, Saturn rules Capricorn (the 10th, the strongest angle) and Aquarius (the 11th, the most harmful house). Its moolatrikona is Aquarius, so the 11th wins and Saturn is a malefic for Aries. Move the ascendant to Taurus and the same two signs become the 9th and 10th: Saturn turns into the best planet in the chart.

4. What ruling an angle does

Angles are the pillars of a chart, but their lordship works in an unusual way: it pulls a planet towards neutral.

5. The yogakaraka

When one planet rules both an angle and a trine, it combines power with fortune. Parashara calls it a yogakaraka, a planet that by itself produces a raja yoga, and its periods tend to be the most productive in a life. Only six ascendants have one:

AscendantYogakarakaRules
TaurusSaturn9th and 10th
LibraSaturn4th and 5th
CancerMars5th and 10th
LeoMars4th and 9th
CapricornVenus5th and 10th
AquariusVenus4th and 9th

Notice the pattern: the yogakaraka is always the ruler of the signs that fall 4th–5th or 9th–10th from the ascendant, which only Saturn, Mars and Venus can be, because only they rule two neighbouring signs.

6. Raja yoga from two lords

Most ascendants have no single yogakaraka, but a raja yoga can still form between two planets: the lord of an angle and the lord of a trine, when they are connected. The classical connections are sitting together, aspecting each other, or exchanging signs. The yoga is stronger when the meeting happens in an angle or a trine.

Parashara adds a condition that is easy to miss. If either planet’s main lordship is a harmful house, the yoga is spoiled. That is why he says Jupiter and Saturn together give no yoga for Aries, and Jupiter and Venus none for Leo.

For five ascendants he names a pair directly: Mercury and Venus for Virgo, the Moon and Mercury for Libra, the Sun and Moon for Scorpio, the Sun and Mercury for Sagittarius, and Mars and Jupiter for Pisces.

7. Marakas: read with care

The 2nd and 7th houses are counted as houses of death (maraka sthanas), because each is 12th, the house of loss, from a house of life. Their lords, and malefics placed in them, are called marakas. Their periods are examined when judging longevity, but only after the length of life promised by the whole chart has been judged.

A planet can be a yogakaraka and a maraka at once: the two roles run on separate tracks, and one does not cancel the other. LotusAstro never uses a maraka to predict harm or to frighten anyone.

8. Rahu and Ketu

The two shadow planets rule no signs in this scheme, so lordship cannot classify them. Instead they take on the results of the planets they sit with and the houses they occupy. Parashara singles out one case: Rahu or Ketu placed in an angle or a trine and joined with the lord of a trine or an angle can itself give the results of a yoga.

9. Parashara’s verdict for each ascendant

In the second half of the chapter Parashara applies the rules to every ascendant. This table summarises what he names; where he is silent on a planet it is left out. To see every planet classified with its reasons, use the yogakaraka finder.

10. Where Parashara overrides his own rules

In a few places his verdict differs from what the general rules predict. These are the cases students argue about most:

Where Parashara names a planet explicitly for an ascendant, his verdict is followed. Where he is silent, the general rules apply.

11. The final word: yogas outrank lordship

The chapter ends with a caution. A planet that is malefic by lordship but takes part in a good yoga gives that yoga’s results; a planet that is benefic by lordship but takes part in a bad yoga cannot save it. Functional nature is a layer, not the whole reading.

How LotusAstro uses chapter 34

Functional nature is layer three of every reading in our method, after the birth chart and the divisional charts. We are now testing these rules, verse by verse, against real charts with reliable birth times. Results will be published in the Sutras register as each test is completed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a yogakaraka planet?

A planet that rules both an angle (the 4th, 7th or 10th house) and a trine (the 5th or 9th) for a given ascendant. It joins power with fortune, so its periods tend to be the most productive in the chart. Six ascendants have one: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.

What is the difference between a natural and a functional benefic?

Natural nature is fixed: Jupiter and Venus are always gentle by nature, Saturn and Mars always harsh. Functional nature depends on the houses a planet rules for your ascendant. Chapter 34 of BPHS is about functional nature, and for timing results it carries more weight.

Is a maraka planet dangerous?

Not by itself. The lords of the 2nd and 7th houses are called marakas, and their periods are examined when judging longevity, together with the strength of the whole chart and of the lifespan indicated. Classical authors never read a maraka in isolation, and neither do we.

Why does Parashara sometimes break his own rules?

In the second half of the chapter he gives a verdict for each ascendant. In a handful of cases it differs from what the general rules predict, for example the Sun for Taurus and Jupiter for Cancer. Where he names a planet explicitly, his verdict for that ascendant is followed.
